Vacuum Cleaner Spot

A vacuum cleaner is a device which uses an air pump to create a vacuum which is used to suck up dirt and dust, usually from carpeted floors. The dirt is collected by a filtering system into a paper bag or cyclone for later disposal. The first hand-powered cleaner using the vacuum principles may have been the "Whirlwind," invented in Chicago in 1865.

In Birmingham, England, in 1905, "Griffith's Improved Vacuum Apparatus for Removing Dust from Carpets" was patented. However, H. Cecil Booth had first patented the "vacuum" cleaning system some four years earlier.

Two general models of vacuum cleaners have emerged. Upright vacuum cleaners have the pump mounted directly about the suction outlet, with the disposable bag mounted on the handle. Canister designs, meanwhile, have the motor and the bag in a separate unit (usually mounted on wheels) connected to the vacuum head by a flexible hose. Both types are also equipped with a variety of attachments which allow them to be used in places that would be unreachable with the normal vacuum head.
